Thank you to everyone who took part and helped shape the future of transport in the East Midlands.
The conversation invited people across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to share what matters most to them about the region’s future transport network. In total, 36,489 people engaged, providing a strong foundation for the next stage of the Mayor’s Transport Plan.
The plan will set the strategic direction for transport through to 2040. It will bring buses, trams, rail, trains, roads, walking, wheeling and cycling together as one joined-up network, supporting stronger communities, economic growth and better access to opportunity.
What was being consulted on in the plan?
This consultation marked the first stage in developing the Mayor’s Transport Plan. It asked whether the emerging ambition, goals and policies reflected the region’s priorities and provided the right basis for a better-connected East Midlands.
The Mayor’s top three priorities
- Public transport that’s easier to use and more affordable
- Connecting communities to each other with travel choices that go beyond reliance on the private car
- Bringing highways into a good state of repair so they offer reliability
What you told us
The findings show strong support for the proposed direction. Better-connected communities, reliable public transport and well-maintained roads and pavements emerged as leading priorities.
People also want safe and affordable journeys, simpler ticketing, accurate real-time information and stronger links to employment, education, healthcare and essential services.
From feedback to delivery
EMCCA has secured £2.2 billion for transport over six years, creating a major opportunity to improve journeys across the region. Investment already includes nearly £150 million for bus services, £362 million for roads, pavements, bridges and street lighting, and £42 million for walking, wheeling and cycling routes over the next three years.

What happens next?
The consultation findings will now inform the full Mayor’s Transport Plan. A substantial amount of detailed strategy and policy development work will now be done, EMCCA will combine public feedback with technical evidence to develop a clear, deliverable strategy for the region.
The full plan will be published for a second public consultation before it is formally adopted, giving residents, businesses and organisations another opportunity to help shape the region’s transport future.
