Motorists are urged to plan ahead as work beings on a key junction as part of a major road improvement scheme in Nottinghamshire.

Earthworks, utility diversions and the removal of traffic islands, lighting columns and traffic lights will be the main focus at Kirk Hill in East Bridgford as works move onto the junction itself later this month.

Works on the A614/A6097 scheme officially kicked off last month – and now archaeology works off East Bridgford Road are complete, main works to improve the junction will begin on Monday 24 August 2026.

The scheme, which will improve key junctions across Nottinghamshire, received a £12.6 million investment from Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward after she successfully helped get the project over the line through direct engagement with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in September.

Mayor Claire said: “The start of main works at Kirk Hill is a significant milestone for the A614/A6097 improvement scheme and shows how investment through the East Midlands Combined County Authority can help deliver the infrastructure our communities need.

“This route is incredibly important for local journeys, and for how people, businesses and services connect across Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands. I know first-hand how frustrating delays on this road can be and welcome the benefits that improving these key junctions will deliver.

“Our £12.6m contribution is a major investment in the scheme and reflects our commitment to backing transport improvements that support local communities, strengthen connections and help the region move forward.”

The road improvement works, which will be delivered by Danaher & Walsh, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council and Via East Midlands, mean Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will be closed from 24 August for 12 months and that a temporary speed restriction will be in place on the A6097.

Motorists travelling to and from East Bridgford are advised a diversion route will be in place via Fosse Way, Butt Lane and Main Street. Trent Lane and Brunt’s Lane will remain closed and will not be opened as part of the diversion and motorists are asked to avoid attempting to use these roads to access East Bridgford.

‘Exciting time’

Councillor Bert Bingham, Nottinghamshire County Council cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “Archaeology works at Kirk Hill officially marked the start of works on the wider A614/A6097 scheme and we are pleased to have another update for residents and motorists that works will now be moving on to the junction later this month.

“This is a really exciting time for Nottinghamshire as we look to bring these long-awaited improvements to a key corridor through the county into reality.

“Once works at Kirk Hill are complete next autumn, the junction will have an extra lane in each direction and new road markings will make turning right easier.

“Other upgrades to the junction will include a new traffic signal system to better manage vehicle flow, upgraded street lighting to increase visibility, the renewal of the footpath along Kirk Hill and upgrades to the bridleway crossing to improve access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

“We know the closure of Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will affect residents and motorists travelling to and from East Bridgford and so we would like to reassure them that a diversion route will be in place.

“These road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of our staff working on site and we have carefully designed the programme of work to make sure that disruption is reduced where possible.”

Road improvements

Kirk Hill is one of five junctions which are part of the A614/A6097 road improvements scheme – including Ollerton Roundabout – which will help tackle congestion and make journeys quicker and easier at key pinch points in Lowdham, Ollerton and Blidworth.

At Kirk Hill, work will focus on widening the junction to add an extra lane in each direction on the A6097 to increase capacity and reduce journey times. Right-turn lanes into Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will also be widened with new road markings aiming to make turning right safer and easier for motorists.

Junction improvements will also include a new traffic signal system to better manage vehicle flow, upgraded street lighting to increase visibility, the renewal of the footpath along Kirk Hill and upgrades to the bridleway crossing to improve access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
