Work is set to start on a Mansfield town centre development after the Mayor of the East Midlands awarded £1 million to unlock the site.
Mayor Claire Ward has awarded the money, from her Brownfield Housing Fund, to Mansfield District Council, to enable vital preparation work at the White Hart Street development.
Mayor Claire said: “I’ve awarded £1 million through the Brownfield Housing Fund to support Mansfield’s White Hart Street Development. This is exactly the kind of regeneration our region needs, turning neglected land into affordable homes and creating vibrant places where communities can grow.
“Working in partnership with Mansfield District Council is ensuring that we deliver real benefits to local people now and for generations to come.”

The White Hart Street Development will transform a brownfield site that has stood underused for more than a decade. The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) grant will support clearance, remediation, and early-phase enabling works, unlocking the land for regeneration and construction of new homes.
Mansfield District Council has received funding to build 43 high-quality, energy efficient homes at the site, including family properties and apartments to meet the needs of local people. It’s expected that work will start in late 2026, with a view to completion in 2028.

Elected Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams said: “This funding from Mayor Claire is a major milestone in unlocking the potential of a site that has stood empty for far too long. The White Hart Street Development will deliver much-needed, high‑quality, sustainable homes while supporting our wider vision for a thriving and inclusive town centre.
“This investment helps us lay the foundations, literally and figuratively, for a prosperous future shaped by the people of Mansfield.”
Sustainability is a core principle of the project, with the homes having an environmentally friendly design, low‑carbon materials, and green technologies supporting Mansfield District Council’s ambition to be net zero by 2040.

The wider development will reflect Mansfield’s rich architectural and social heritage, reintroducing historic pedestrian routes, creating new public spaces, and incorporating refurbished heritage buildings for community and commercial use.
Central to the scheme is a new community hub and landscaped areas designed to encourage social connection, wellbeing and pride of place.
This new scheme builds on the success EMCCA has already had on delivering Mayor Claire’s ambition to build high-quality, sustainable homes across the East Midlands. More than £93m has been secured from the government to unlock brownfield sites for housing, with work already in progress on nine sites in region.
