The Mayor of the East Midlands has launched the region’s biggest listening exercise in decades – a 12-week conversation to shape a bold new 15-year transport vision.
The Local Transport high-level vision explores the Mayor’s objectives to make travel across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire easier, cleaner and better connected.
Residents, businesses and community groups are now being invited to take part in the Mayor’s Big Transport Conversation, to help shape the development of the full Plan.
For the first time, the Mayor now has the power to plan transport as one joined-up network, bringing buses, trams, trains, walking and cycling routes together across the region.
The Plan sets a clear direction for billions of pounds of investment to tackle key challenges like congestion, air pollution, and unreliable public transport, while promoting safer, greener routes for cycling, wheeling, and walking.
Mayor Claire has six ‘fights’ for a fairer, better-connected East Midlands:

We want to make sure the Mayor’s Transport Plan reflects the needs and priorities of our region. By asking for your feedback, we can:
You should give your feedback on the Mayor’s transport plan because it affects your daily life. How you get to work, school or see friends and family is done so using our transport network. This is your chance to speak up about what you think works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change. This could include not enough buses in your area, unsafe roads, or a lack of active travel options. If you don’t share your thoughts, the plan might not reflect what your area really needs. Your input can help make transport safer, easier, and better for everyone in the region.
It is being done to create a transport plan that works well for everyone and helps build a better, more connected region.
The Mayor’s Transport Plan sets the vision for transport across the region, providing strategic leadership and a framework for detailed sub-strategies and investment plans. Delivered by EMCCA with local authorities and partners, progress will be tracked to show real change.
Building on a strong track record and local expertise, the Plan aims to tackle challenges and support inclusive growth. It’s not just about projects, but also the policies, partnerships, and tools needed to deliver long-term improvements.
The Mayor’s Transport Plan is part of EMCCA’s wider strategy, sitting under the East Midlands Inclusive Growth Framework, which aligns policy across the region. Transport plays a key role in creating access to jobs, education, housing, and health, and supports place-making and regeneration.
It is one of several initial strategies, alongside the Local Growth Plan, Spatial Development Strategy, and Get Britain Working. The Plan also supports wider efforts like the Local Area Energy Plan and Destination Management Plan, and contributes to national goals on active travel, low-emission vehicles, air quality, biodiversity, and housing.
We are awaiting the Government’s Integrated National Transport Strategy, expected later this year.
We’ll use the feedback from given, especially any concerns or ideas people share to help shape the vision and goals of the Transport Plan as it develops. This will guide us in creating a bold and effective plan that focuses on the right actions to better connect communities and support fair and inclusive growth across our region.
After the twelve-week conversation period ends, we’ll publish a summary of the results.
We’ll also use the findings to help refine the Transport Plan further, working closely with partners and key stakeholders throughout the process.
We want to hear from a wide range of people across the region to make sure it reflects everyone’s needs.
