Creating a greener future for our region
The East Midlands Regional Area Energy Plan is the largest project of its kind developed in England, bringing together eight local area energy plans from across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire into a single regional framework.
It identifies where improvements to energy infrastructure may be needed, where investment could have the greatest impact and how communities can benefit from cleaner, more reliable and affordable energy.
The plan will help guide us, regional local authorities, and our partners to develop business cases and explore opportunities for future investment that can help deliver economic growth, improve energy resilience and support the region’s transition to cleaner energy.
What is the Regional Area Energy Plan?
The Regional Area Energy Plan is a roadmap that helps identify the changes needed across homes, businesses, transport and energy infrastructure to meet future energy demand and support the transition to cleaner energy.
The plan highlights priority areas including improving the energy efficiency of homes, installing heat pumps, expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure and increasing renewable energy generation.
What does the regional plan and Digital Twin tell us?
The plan highlights the scale of transformation needed across buildings, transport, industry and energy networks to create a more resilient, affordable and sustainable energy system.
By 2050, this could include:
- more than 800,000 heat pumps installed in homes
- over 940,000 electric vehicle charging points
- more than 50,000 heat network domestic connections
- over 26,000 heat pumps installed in non-domestic buildings
These measures have the potential to reduce energy bills, improve air quality, create warmer homes and support long-term economic growth. The plan also estimates that by 2050:
- households and businesses could benefit from up to £4.7 billion in energy bill savings through more energy-efficient homes and buildings
- around £500 million could be saved through improving air quality because of lower healthcare costs and fewer working days lost to ill health causes
- a £14.6 billion growth in the region’s economy, as the energy transition will support jobs, investment, business growth and supply chains
Alongside the plan, a Digital Twin has been developed to provide an interactive digital model of the region’s energy system.
The tool brings together data on buildings, energy use and local communities, with the aim for local authorities to utilise it and better understand their area’s challenges and opportunities. It can be used to identify areas where issues such as fuel poverty or poor home energy efficiency are most prevalent, helping target future support, investment and projects where they can make the greatest difference.

Below you will find links to each of the eight local area energy plans from across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. They set out what the local findings are for your area and correspond with the key provided alongside the map of the region.
What happens next?
Any future projects, funding commitments or investment programmes will be developed with partners through separate business cases and approval processes.
The regional plan and Digital Twin will play an important role in helping shape future decisions, ensuring investment is targeted where it can deliver the greatest benefits for residents, businesses and communities across the East Midlands.
