Mayor Claire Ward has welcomed the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham’s, announcement to lower the bus fare cap to £2 for 2027, hailing it as vital cost of living relief for passengers across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
The lower cap will help passengers manage the cost of getting to work, education, healthcare, shops, and leisure, while supporting the local bus network that communities rely on every day.
To deliver the reduced fares on the ground, East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) will receive additional government support to help local bus operators manage the impact of lower fares, helping to protect services while keeping travel cheaper for passengers. This funding sits alongside EMCCA’s ongoing work to establish a single, region-wide Enhanced Partnership with operators, designed to raise network standards, upgrade infrastructure, and deliver an affordable network with simple, integrated ticketing.
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “This is good news for people across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire who rely on buses every day. Whether it’s getting to work, school or college, a hospital appointment, the shops, or simply seeing friends and family, affordable bus services help people get where they need to be and make everyday life a little easier.
“Lower fares can make a real difference to household budgets while giving more people a practical and affordable alternative to the car. Public transport plays a vital role in connecting people to jobs, education, services and opportunities across our region.
“I welcome this announcement and the continued devolution of transport funding. Decisions about local transport are best made locally, and giving Mayoral Authorities greater control over funding means we can take a long-term approach, investing in the services and connections that matter most to the communities we serve.”
Mayor Claire Ward is also committing regional funding to extend free bus travel to 16 to 18-year-olds throughout the month of August. This initiative builds on the national scheme for children aged 5 to 15, who are eligible for free travel during the same period.
The reduced fare cap takes effect from 27 January 2027 and will remain in place for the full calendar year.
