Natural capital and climate adaptation
We’re promoting nature-based solutions, like tree planting and natural flood defences, to help tackle the impacts of climate change and protect the benefits nature provides for people and wildlife.
Our Nature and Biodiversity Taskforce is working to protect and enhance the natural world across the East Midlands.
Our goal is to ensure that nature thrives — supporting healthier communities, resilient habitats, and sustainable places to live, work, and learn.
Mayor Claire Ward launched the Nature and Biodiversity Taskforce to deliver on her commitment to the environment. The Taskforce brings together experts from across the region to share their views on how we can embed nature into our strategies and delivery plans.
Austin Brady, former Director of Conservation at the Woodland Trust, leads the Taskforce as an Independent Chair. He brings over 40 years of experience in conservation, forestry, and land management.
We’re promoting nature-based solutions, like tree planting and natural flood defences, to help tackle the impacts of climate change and protect the benefits nature provides for people and wildlife.
We’re bringing nature back to life by supporting local plans to restore habitats and protect important wildlife areas, helping nature recover in places where it has been lost or damaged.
We’re improving access to spaces like parks, woodlands, rivers, and ponds — especially in communities that need them most — and creating opportunities for people to learn about and care for the natural world.
We’re investing in nature’s future by exploring new ways to fund environmental projects, such as green investment, nature-based tourism, and partnerships that support lasting improvements for nature and local communities.
The Taskforce includes leaders from local authorities, environmental organisations, and national bodies:
“I am committed to improving the quality of our environment and helping nature to recover and thrive in our region. This Taskforce will help to identify and deliver new opportunities to embed nature into the emerging strategy of the combined authority. Valuing nature and our natural places helps to underpin and support businesses and communities. Improving it will make our region an even better place to live and work.”
— Austin Brady, Chair of the Nature and Biodiversity Taskforce
