The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) has announced more than £1.8 million of funding to make walking and cycling safer and easier in Nottingham.
The money will help improve Gregory Boulevard, support popular community cycling sessions, and look at future projects to make getting around the city on foot or by bike more convenient.
Subject to approval by Nottingham City Council’s Executive Board on 21 October, £1.3m will go towards improving Gregory Boulevard, between the A60 Mansfield Road and Noel Street.
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “I’m pleased to invest £1.8m in Nottingham to make walking and cycling safer and easier for everyone. This isn’t just about improving roads and paths, it’s about giving people real choices for how they get around, helping families, students, and workers travel more easily, and encouraging healthier, more active lifestyles.”
The Gregory Boulevard work will make it safer and more pleasant to walk or cycle along the busy road, linking nearby neighbourhoods and key places such as:
The improvements will include new crossings, resurfaced paths, and better cycling facilities. This will make it easier for people to travel between home, school, work, and leisure spots without needing to drive.
The road will also be resurfaced while the works are taking place in a bid to reduce future disruption.
This project supports wider plans to upgrade The Forest Sports Zone, where a £2.6m improvement project was approved earlier this year. Together, these schemes will make it easier for people to get active and travel safely.
Before any work starts, the plans for Gregory Boulevard will go out to public consultation, giving residents the chance to have their say and help shape the final design.
Mayor Claire said: “These improvements will connect communities, schools, parks, and leisure facilities, making everyday journeys simpler and more enjoyable. They’ll also help create cleaner, greener streets and more vibrant neighbourhoods where people want to spend time.
“I’m proud that through the East Midlands Combined County Authority, we’re able to fund projects like this that make a real difference to people’s lives.”
As well as £1.3m towards improving Gregory Boulevard, £500,000 has been put towards research and developing potential future schemes to improve walking and cycling networks in Nottingham, alongside continuing funding for a successful programme in partnership with British Cycling.
The British Cycling programme which began in spring 2025, offers free have a go at cycling sessions aimed helping people to get on their bikes.
Councillor Linda Woodings, Nottingham City Council’s Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport, said: “We’re really pleased to receive this funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority.
“The improvements on Gregory Boulevard will make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel, or cycle — connecting schools, parks, and communities, and supporting a healthier, greener Nottingham.”
