Innovative rail ticket technology to be trialled across the East Midlands

Passengers across the East Midlands region can take advantage of a more convenient way to travel, thanks to the launch of a new digital ticketing trial exclusively between Leicester, Derby, and Nottingham.

From today, East Midlands Railway (EMR) passengers can take part in trials of a cutting-edge ticketing system that allows them to check-in and check-out of their journeys using a location-tracking app.

The advanced app uses GPS technology to identify journeys and automatically charge the best-value fare at the end of the day, eliminating the need to buy tickets in advance.

Instead of traditional paper tickets or QR codes, the app generates a barcode for inspections and station barriers, streamlining the process for travellers across the region.

Up to 1,000 passengers can sign up for the trial via the EMR website. This initiative brings greater flexibility to daily rail travel and ensures passengers are never overcharged.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “Since I first stood to be Mayor, it’s been my ambition to introduce integrated, tap on and off ticketing technology across the region. I’m therefore very pleased to see this first step towards simpler and more flexible train tickets being trialled by East Midlands Rail.

“It’s important to me that residents have automatic access to the best value for money when travelling. I urge anyone who uses this line regularly to register their interest and give it a go.

“With full public transport responsibilities being devolved to me in 2026, I look forward to hearing the feedback from East Midlands Rail and working together in the future to make easier journeys possible for everyone in the East Midlands.”

This is the first time such a trial has been introduced to England’s rail network, with the trials forming part of a wider plans to modernise regional transport, reduce barriers to train travel, and put passenger experience at the heart of the transport network.

This digital ticketing pilot also aligns with national plans to reform Britain’s railway through the creation of Great British Railways whose headquarters will be located in Derby, aiming to deliver a more reliable and customer-focused service.
