Chesterfield’s landmark Stephenson Memorial Hall, is soon to reopen as ‘1435’ after a multimillion pound transformation.

As proud funders of this project, the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) recognises the importance of investing in cultural venues that foster community connection, support local heritage, and create vibrant spaces for residents and visitors alike.

The new 1435 venue, named in honour of George Stephenson’s railway innovation, will feature a 625-seat theatre, expanded museum facilities, two bars, and flexible spaces for events, education, and community activities. The revitalised building will not only preserve its rich history, but also offer greater accessibility and a truly distinctive experience in the heart of Chesterfield town centre.

EMCCA contributed £1 million through its capital grants programme to help bring this vision to life, alongside support from Chesterfield Borough Council, Arts Council England, and other partners. This investment is part of our commitment to creating places where people feel proud to live, work, and visit – and to ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared throughout our communities.

Discover the renewed 1435, attend upcoming performances such as December’s pantomime, and explore the expanded museum when it opens later this year. To find out more and stay updated on events, please visit the Chesterfield Theatres and Museum website: www.chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “I am delighted to support the renovation of this much-loved venue and look forward to visiting when it reopens.

“EMCCA’s commitment to our communities is about creating places where people feel proud to live, work, and visit, something the renewed 1435 will certainly support in Chesterfield.

“Cultural attractions are a cornerstone of our visitor economy and a vital driver of opportunity. We are proud to support them – helping showcase our region, attract visitors, and create jobs – so the benefits of growth are shared across our communities.”
